OLED R&D and production heat should not be reduced to focus on standard setting

At present, the development of the OLED industry urgently needs to solve three problems: First, reduce costs. Second, to improve life, this is an important step for OLED to enter the durable consumer market such as TV. Third, strengthen application development, especially in the field of mobile phones and mobile displays, strengthen the cooperation between upstream and downstream industries, and give full play to the technological advantages of OLED.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in the beginning of this year, we saw a large number of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) products ranging from 15 inches to 32 inches. In 2009, OLED seems to be entering a period of rapid development. According to statistics, the research and industrialization of large-scale OLEDs are heating up. Although affected by the international financial crisis, the pace of research has not stopped and changed. At present, life expectancy and cost are still relatively large problems in the development of OLED. Experts said that the current OLED needs to solve the problem is to reduce costs, improve life and strengthen application development.

Technological development and application spiraling

From the development history of OLEDs in the past five years, OLED technology is constantly advancing, but the industry is indeed spiraling. Zhai Tongsheng, chairman of Zhejiang University Tricolor Instrument Co., Ltd. believes that the development of OLED industry is related to three factors: first, the progress of OLED technology, second, the development of terminal application industry, and third, competition with LCD (liquid crystal display) industry.

Xu Wei, from the Institute of Polymer Optoelectronic Materials and Devices of South China University of Technology, said in an interview with China Electronics News that the current domestic OLED technology research and development is indeed very hot, both enterprises and research institutions are very concerned about the development of OLED technology. The rise of China's OLED boom, the larger event is the production of Visionox's OLED large-scale production line. In 2008, Vision's OLED production line quickly entered the domestic and international markets after it was put into production in the fourth quarter. The product application fields involved portable consumer products, instrumentation, and medical instruments.

In an interview with China Electronics News, Weixinquan senior consultant Wan Boquan said that in the past two years, OLED technology has developed greatly, especially the large-size active-drive OLED (AM OLED) technology has realized the industry. The transfer, which plays a decisive role in promoting the further development of OLED. Since the second half of 2007, technological achievements have begun to appear, and products using OLEDs, especially AMOLED technology, have begun to appear in the market.

OLED is a new technology, the development time is relatively short, there are still many immature places in the technology, and the scale of the industry is not up, resulting in high cost. Between 2005 and 2006, OLEDs entered a trough. The direct reason is that the price of liquid crystal displays has dropped, which has caused the application of OLEDs to be in trouble. Many enterprises that are engaged in the research and development and application of OLED technology have closed down. In fact, it is the technical reason. Since the second half of 2007, OLED applications have risen, mainly due to technical reasons. In recent years, OLED technology has become more mature. But we should see that OLED is still a new technology after all, and the future development should be driven by technology rather than market.

In 2007, Sony launched an 11-inch OLED TV, which is an exciting news for the industry. Therefore, it can be said that OLED began to enter a spiral period in the second half of 2007. DisplaySearch's December 2008 survey report shows that in the next seven years, OLED display shipments will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 20%. It is expected that the compound annual growth rate of OLED TV shipments in the next seven years will be as high as 126%. AMOLED is very suitable for TV in terms of performance. In 2008, only Sony OLED TV was sold in the market. In 2009, Sony, Samsung, LG, etc. all launched OLED TVs, which are larger than 11 inches. Liu Weidong, chief engineer of Hisense Electric Co., Ltd., said in an interview with China Electronics News that since the development of flat-panel TVs has become ultra-thin, the companies such as Sharp, Hitachi, Sony, Samsung and Panasonic have shown or Introducing ultra-thin LCD or plasma TV, and in terms of ultra-thin, OLED has a technical natural advantage, and OLED represents the latest flat panel display technology. This is Sony at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this year. Samsung, LG, etc. have shown the main reasons for a variety of 15-inch-32-inch OLED TVs. Since the current cost or price difference between OLED and 7-inch LCD and LCD can reach several times, the problem of low production yield has not been completely solved, so it is still very difficult to enter the market. Liu Weidong believes.
