According to a report from foreign media InsideEVs, the Audi Sport performance division is considering introducing all-electric performance models in the future, with an official release expected between 2020 and 2025. In previous discussions, Stephan Winkelmann, the head of the performance department, expressed a preference for developing fully electric vehicles (EVs) rather than plug-in hybrids. When discussing the potential prototypes of future electric performance cars, he mentioned that the focus will be on SUVs and four-door sedans instead of creating a dedicated electric supercar. The main reason behind this decision is that EVs require significant space for battery packs and powertrain components, which makes it challenging to fit into the compact design of traditional supercars.
Winkelmann stated, "Between 2020 and 2025, Audi will begin its transition toward electrification. However, our first step won't be to develop a pure electric car like the R8, but rather to focus on SUVs or four-door sedans. In these zero-emission models, we'll prioritize advancements in battery packaging technology, cabin space optimization, and horsepower-to-weight ratio control—ensuring an unforgettable performance experience, just as we've done with our gasoline-powered models." Although the brand recently discontinued the R8 e-tron electric model, only selling fewer than 100 units, Audi remains committed to the future of electric vehicle development. The company is clearly looking ahead, and there's much more to come.
