Since the start of this year, China's air purification industry has shown consistent growth, with new ventilation systems that combine air purification and air exchange becoming a popular consumer trend. However, industry experts note that no clear market leader has emerged yet, and competition remains intense. The lack of standardized regulations in the fresh air purification sector is also a concern, highlighting the urgent need for leading companies to set benchmarks and guide future development.
Weiersen Technology, a high-tech company specializing in smart control solutions for green buildings, recently launched two new lines of indoor fresh air purification products: the hidden intelligent fresh air unit and the wall-mounted intelligent fresh air unit. Their proprietary "ECO" and "IAQR" control systems have attracted significant attention. The ECO system automatically adjusts operation modes and fan speeds based on real-time indoor pollutant levels such as PM2.5, CO2, and TVOC. Meanwhile, the IAQR system uses a built-in Wi-Fi module to enable remote monitoring and real-time feedback on air quality and purification performance.
While technological advancements are driving rapid growth in the industry, challenges remain. Market fragmentation, unclear standards, and inconsistent product quality have raised concerns. Experts recommend establishing stronger national standards to improve product quality and raise entry barriers for substandard players.
Cui Gang, chairman of Henan Wilson Technology, emphasized that no single company has yet achieved a dominant position in terms of brand or scale. The industry is highly competitive, with many players and limited differentiation. He believes that benchmark enterprises must emerge to lead the next phase of development.
According to incomplete data, China’s air purifier retail sales reached 5.77 million units in 2016, up 17.7% from the previous year. In the first quarter of 2017, sales surged by 47% year-on-year. From 2011 to 2016, the industry saw an average annual growth rate of 42.8% in sales volume and 43.1% in revenue. As living standards rise, people are increasingly focused on improving their indoor environments.
With growing awareness of air pollution, fresh air systems that offer both cleaning and ventilation functions have become a major consumer trend, potentially becoming the sixth essential household appliance after TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, and range hoods. Industry analysts predict a multi-billion-dollar market potential in the future.
China’s air purifier market is transitioning from the 1.0 era of standalone purifiers to the 2.0 era, where integration with fresh air systems is becoming the norm. Despite being in its early stages, the market shows strong growth potential.
Jin Yongsheng, sales director at AAF Greater China, noted that environmental issues have created new opportunities for the air purification industry. Rising consumer spending power, increased awareness of air health, and demand for better quality of life are all driving growth. Currently, less than 5% of Chinese households own an air purifier, compared to a 27% penetration rate in the U.S. At that level, the market could eventually reach over 90 million units.
As more households adopt fresh air systems and air purifiers, consumer awareness is increasing. Brand reputation, technological innovation, and after-sales service are key factors influencing purchasing decisions. Cui Gang added that while China already has a relatively complete product and brand system, the market is shifting from quantity to quality. With ongoing improvements in standards and increased competition, industry chaos will gradually be resolved. Companies with real technology and capabilities will thrive, leading to a more rational and sustainable development of the air purification sector.
