Application method of ultraviolet spectrophotometer for detecting ozone in water
Keywords: aesthetic instrument, UV-visible spectrophotometer, ozone detection, analytical method, UV-1100, UV-1300 Ozone (O₃) has been gradually recognized since the 1840s. Composed of three oxygen atoms, it has a high oxidation potential, making it an effective oxidizer that can degrade impurities in water and kill various pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and even larvae of certain aquatic organisms. Its use in water treatment dates back to the 1880s, with early applications in France and the Netherlands. By the 1900s, ozone treatment became more widespread, especially in developed countries. In China, the first ozone system was installed at the Fuzhou Water Plant in 1908, and over time, several water plants began using ozone for purification.
Ozone is preferred because it does not produce harmful byproducts like chlorine does, and any excess ozone quickly decomposes. This makes it one of the safest disinfectants available. However, its application is still limited in developing countries due to high costs and energy consumption. In contrast, many bottled water plants in China have adopted ozone treatment, achieving international standards for bacterial control. Proper implementation of ozone technology requires careful attention to factors such as ozone concentration, contact time, and water conditions.
One of the key challenges in ozone treatment is ensuring that the gas dissolves effectively in water. The solubility of ozone depends on temperature, pressure, and the surface area of contact between the gas and water. Techniques such as bubble columns, venturi injectors, and mechanical mixers are commonly used to enhance ozone absorption. Additionally, measuring ozone concentration accurately is crucial for effective sterilization. Methods like iodometric titration, ultraviolet absorption, and electrochemical analysis are widely used in practice.
Proper understanding of ozone’s behavior in water, along with accurate measurement and control systems, is essential for successful implementation. With the right equipment and procedures, ozone can provide a safe and efficient way to purify water, meeting high-quality standards in both industrial and consumer applications.
