Musk: Model X accident does not blame Autopilot, but we will update the package to improve it

Earlier this month, Tesla was exposed to a second accident. On July 1st, a Model X crashed at the Bedford exit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last week. In the accident, Model X hit the guardrail on the right side of the road, then bounced back to the central guardrail and rolled over and the car top landed. Fortunately, the accident did not cause any injuries to the driver or passengers. Driver Albert Scaglione said: At that time, Autopilot’s Autopilot was on.

In recent days, Musk posted Twitter:

At the time, Autopilot was in the closed state. If it was turned on at that time, the accident would not happen.

After the incident, the police said there was not enough evidence to prove that Autopilot was the culprit. In addition, Tesla also stated that there is no reason to believe that Autopilot is in use when a car accident occurs.

Tesla Autopilot has been questioned because of frequent accidents. Many people think that Musk's name of this system as the Autopilot system gives one a misunderstanding. Because at present, Tesla's Autopilot is still in the assisted driving stage and does not reach the level of automatic driving. Therefore, many people suggested Tesla to change the name of the system. In this regard, Tesla said it will not be renamed, nor will this system be removed from the vehicle. On the other hand, Tesla has repeatedly stressed that drivers must keep their hands on the steering wheel while driving an Autopilot.

It seems that although the wave of incidents has caused people to sing Autopilot badly, "Iron Man" Musk is quite confident in his semi-autonomous driving system. On Sunday, Musk issued a tweet saying that after communicating with its radar sensor provider Bosch, he believes that the auto-released software update package can "substantially improve" Autopilot. However, Musk did not disclose the details of the improvement of Autopilot, nor did it disclose the release time of the update package.

Now, Autopilot is clearly at the forefront of the wave. Various agencies, including the US Congress, the NHTSA, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, have launched investigations into the system. Now in Europe, Tesla Autopilot has also become the focus of the relevant departments. Tesla's Autopilot technology is currently approved by the Dutch Vehicle Certification Center (RDW) and can be used in Europe. Recently, the Dutch Transport Authority (RDW) stated that “no security risks were found” in the Tesla Autopilot system. If used correctly, this system is the same as that of other car manufacturers' semi-autonomous driving systems.

However, Germany, Tesla’s largest market in Europe, is quite tough. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) expressed regret that the system was installed on Tesla electric cars and caused irreparable murders. German regulators said that only when Tesla openly admits that Autopilot is only assisting driving, rather than driving automatically, Germany will only allow Tesla to enter the market.

It seems that in this eventful "summer", Musk has to resort to everything. However, “Iron Man” is “Iron Man” in the end. His other company, SpaceX, has to launch and recover rockets today.
