The chimney is 165 meters high, built in 1985 and belongs to the former Nanshi Power Plant (founded in 1897). During the 2010 World Expo, the Nanshi Power Plant was transformed into the City Future Hall (now the Museum of Contemporary Art), and the large chimney was transformed into the "World Expo Weather Signal Tower", becoming one of the landmark buildings of the Expo Site.

The signal tower relies on densely arranged LED light sources, which are represented by six color changes of blue, yellow, orange, red, white, and violet to indicate different degrees of weather conditions. The temperature is displayed by scrolling numbers and symbols. At the same time, it also has many functions such as weather forecast, warning and temperature display.

The chimney thermometer standing in the Puxi Expo Site was once one of the landmarks of the Expo Site. After the World Expo, this giant thermometer has been used. People on both sides of the Pujiang River can see the real-time temperature from a distance. Once there is a weather station's warning, the thermometer will be displayed simultaneously.

However, this giant thermometer stopped working recently. As early as July 24, netizens released news about the “strike” of the thermometer in the Expo site. Netizens commented on Weibo and WeChat. It would be too hot and the thermometer “explodes”.

In early July of this year, there were more thunderstorms. The control box at the top of the chimney was hit by lightning, causing the thermometer to fail to display properly.
