Tencent Artificial Intelligence Three Strategies: Universal AI, Robot Lab and AI+ Medical

Yao Xing, Vice President of Tencent, shared the company's three key strategic directions in artificial intelligence. First, Tencent aims to build a universal AI infrastructure, enabling broader application across industries. Second, the company has established a dedicated robotics lab, RoboTIcs X, to explore and develop advanced robotic solutions. Third, it is focusing on the "AI + Healthcare" strategy, aiming to bring AI technologies into practical medical applications and improve diagnostic efficiency. In his remarks, Yao Xing emphasized that the AI industry is still in its early stages. He pointed out three major challenges: the current AI landscape lacks diversity in real-world deployment, the commercialization of AI remains limited, and most AI applications are still narrow in scope, often serving only as support tools rather than driving full-scale transformation. He further explained that the AI products Tencent promotes are more about integrating AI into existing industries rather than transforming them entirely. "The industry is still the main driver, not AI itself," he said. Additionally, he noted that the impact of AI industrialization hasn't yet reached the scale seen during the PC or mobile internet eras. Moreover, AI implementation is still fragmented, lacking end-to-end integration and instead focusing on improving specific aspects of efficiency or convenience. This is why Tencent is pushing forward with the development of general AI — a system that can simulate and represent the complexity of the real world, which involves multiple roles, constraints, and interactions. According to Yao, building such a system requires a deep understanding of how different elements interact and balance each other. Regarding the new RoboTIcs X lab, Yao mentioned that it will work alongside the Tencent AI Lab to provide foundational support for the company’s AI initiatives. Rumors suggest that Zhang Zhengyou, a former Microsoft Research researcher, may join the lab after leaving Microsoft after 20 years. However, Tencent has not officially confirmed this information. The "AI + Healthcare" initiative is one of the most visible applications of AI. In 2017, Tencent launched its first "AI + Healthcare" product, "Tencent觅影" (Tencent Medical AI), which could screen for esophageal cancer in under four seconds with an accuracy rate of 90%. The product has since expanded to include screening for lung nodules, diabetes, and retinal lesions, and is now deployed in over 100 top-tier hospitals across China. It was also included in the first batch of national AI open innovation platforms. Established in 2016, the Tencent AI Lab focuses on both fundamental research and practical applications of AI, providing technical support for various Tencent products. Its core research areas include computer vision, speech recognition, natural language processing, and machine learning. Based on Tencent’s business needs, the lab has identified four key application domains: gaming, content, social platforms, and tool services. Currently, AI technologies from the lab are integrated into hundreds of Tencent products, including WeChat, QQ, and News Today. The lab employs over 300 experienced AI engineers, with more than 70 AI scientists, 90% of whom hold doctoral degrees, working to achieve both academic influence and industry impact. On the same day, the Tencent AI Lab announced a strategic partnership with Springer Nature, a leading academic publisher, to advance interdisciplinary research in AI and healthcare, promoting the convergence of AI, industry, and scientific research.
