Yao Xing, Vice President of Tencent, outlined three key strategic directions for the company's artificial intelligence (AI) development. The first is to build a universal AI infrastructure, aiming to create a more adaptable and versatile AI system. The second is the establishment of a dedicated robotics lab, focusing on advancing AI-driven automation and intelligent systems. The third is the "AI + Healthcare" initiative, which seeks to explore practical applications of AI in the medical field.
In his remarks, Yao emphasized that the AI industry is still in its early stages. He identified three major challenges: the limited environments where AI can be effectively deployed, the lack of commercialization across the sector, and the narrow scope of current AI applications, often serving only as supporting tools rather than core solutions.
He further explained that the AI products Tencent promotes are primarily "industry + AI," rather than "AI + industry." According to Yao, the industry itself remains the driving force, not AI. Additionally, he pointed out that the value of AI industrialization is not yet as transformative as previous technological revolutions like the PC or mobile internet era. Moreover, the current AI applications are too narrow, lacking comprehensive, end-to-end integration.
This is why Tencent is pushing forward with the development of general AI. "Artificial intelligence is essentially a simulation of the real world in the virtual space," Yao said. "The real world is complex, with numerous roles, constraints, synergies, and balances. General AI aims to capture and represent this complexity."
Regarding the upcoming Tencent Robotics Lab, RoboTIcs X, Yao mentioned that it will serve as a dual-support department alongside the AI Lab, helping to drive AI innovation across the company. Rumors suggest that Zhang Zhengyou, a veteran researcher from Microsoft Research, may join the lab after leaving Microsoft after 20 years, though Tencent has not officially confirmed the news.
The "AI + Healthcare" initiative is one of the most visible applications of AI. In 2017, Tencent launched its first product in this area, "Tencent觅影" (Tencent Medical AI), which can screen for esophageal cancer in under four seconds with 90% accuracy. Over time, the platform has expanded to detect lung nodules, diabetes, and retinal lesions, and is now deployed in over 100 top-tier hospitals across China. "Tencent觅影" was also included in the first batch of national new-generation AI open innovation platforms.
Established in 2016, the Tencent AI Lab focuses on both fundamental research and practical applications of AI. Its core areas include computer vision, speech recognition, natural language processing, and machine learning. The lab also explores AI applications in four main business areas: gaming, content, social platforms, and tool services.
Its technologies have been integrated into hundreds of Tencent products, including WeChat, QQ, and Today’s Headlines. The lab currently employs over 300 experienced AI engineers, with more than 70 AI scientists—most holding doctorates from prestigious institutions worldwide. The team is committed to achieving academic influence and industrial impact.
