In the past year, MediaTek faced some tough times. Orders were down, and even some of their original partners moved on. However, 2018 is shaping up to be a turning point for the company. Let's dive into what's happening with the network communication expert.
According to reports from the Taiwanese supply chain, MediaTek's orders are expected to pick up starting in March this year, especially from domestic smartphone manufacturers. This shift is largely due to the competitive edge of their new Helio P-series processors, which have started to make a significant impact on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 series.
MediaTek is set to launch several new P-series chips, including the P38, P40, P60, and P70. Among these, the P40 and P70 use an A73 big core combined with A53 small cores. The P40 is essentially a lower-frequency version of the P70, while the P70 is manufactured using TSMC's new 12nm process (an optimized version of 14nm). It features four A73 cores and four A53 cores, running at 2.5GHz and 2.0GHz respectively—outperforming the Kirin 970. The P70 also includes a Mali-G72 MP4 GPU clocked at 800MHz, delivering performance that surpasses the current ten-core flagship Helio X30 by over 10%.
In addition to improved performance, the new P-series chips offer a better price-to-performance ratio, which has contributed to a surge in orders. MediaTek's smartphone chip shipments are expected to rise by 23% in the second quarter compared to the first, with revenue potentially increasing by 15% quarter-over-quarter and 1% year-over-year.
Notably, sources indicate that major Chinese phone brands like Xiaomi and OPPO (OV) are preparing new devices powered by the P-series processors. Xiaomi, in particular, is rumored to integrate the P70 into its higher-end Redmi models. However, the exact release date remains unclear.
