Intel's ambition: processor enters base station to expand wireless business

Intel is currently carrying out an ambitious plan in its Beijing laboratory: the company is looking for the possibility of replacing the DSP (Digital Signal Processors) processor in 3G / 4G base stations with a general-purpose CPU.

In recent years, Intel ’s interest in embedded system SoCs has gradually increased, including a wide range from smart phones to communication base stations. According to Zhang Yimin, head of the Intel Embedded Application Lab, most of the research work is carried out in a laboratory in Beijing.

Intel is gradually increasing its R & D capabilities in China. There are now more than 100 researchers (accounting for about 10% of Intel ’s total R & D capabilities) working in a laboratory in Beijing. One of the main reasons for increasing the manpower of China's R & D department is that Mainland China is the world's most suitable market for expanding new businesses.

For example, if Intel ’s processor development process requires a base station with a coverage of 100,000 users, it is likely to be the entire population of a small city in North America or Europe, and the coverage of 100,000 in China may only need to be in a certain area. Each university city can start new communication technology testing.

According to industry rumors, Intel will cooperate with Chinese industry giant Huawei to enter the communications infrastructure market. Here is another reason why Intel ’s R & D power turns to China: At present, the Chinese government is advancing the triple-play process. Once a huge communication network with nearly 1 billion users will be formed, it will require a large number of network equipment; Intel is very important Because of this, the investment in the embedded sector is increased year by year.

At the same time, in addition to the base station, Intel will also work on mobile applications including software and hardware. Although the current power consumption of the company's Atom processor is still much higher than the current SoC products in smart phones, it will be made fully in the next 22nm process next year. After the introduction, Intel is expected to develop a processor suitable for smartphone applications.

Although there are many rumors, Intel has not officially announced the abandonment of the MeeGo operating system. However, in the face of strong opponents such as iOS, it is expected that Intel will eventually invest in the arms of open source camps such as Android or old friends Microsoft.
