[High School Annual Meeting] Guoxing Optoelectronics Liu Chuanbiao: Technology Drive and Industrial Innovation of LED Packaging

At present, the LED packaging is being transferred from abroad to the mainland, with the small-pitch technology now firmly established within China’s industrial chain. According to Liu Chuanbiao, Deputy General Manager of Guoxing Optoelectronics’ RGB Business Unit, the display package has surpassed 58%, especially in the case of small pitches, where the mainland has taken a strong lead. Major packaging companies are expanding their production capacity to meet the growing demand for small-pitch solutions. This insight was shared during the 2017 High-Tech LED Annual Meeting and Golden Globe Awards Ceremony, held in Shenzhen from December 21st to 22nd. Hosted by Gaogong LED, the event focused on themes like "Deepening the Smoke and Softening the Strength" and "Deep Integration and Tapping New Opportunities." With over 400 industry professionals in attendance, the conference provided a platform for leaders to discuss market trends, technological advancements, and strategic directions for the LED industry. Liu Chuanbiao also highlighted the rapid growth of the small-pitch LED market. According to data from the High-Technology Research Institute’s LED Research Institute (GGII), the Chinese small-pitch LED market reached 5.9 billion yuan in 2017, with a penetration rate of 3.3%. It's projected that by 2020, the market will grow to 17.7 billion yuan, with a penetration rate of 7.3%. The development of small-pitch technology has been driven largely by mainland companies, with Guoxing Optoelectronics leading the way. The company currently holds the top position globally in small-pitch packaging capacity (below 1010 package). Liu emphasized that the small-pitch market is highly competitive, and Guoxing has made all necessary preparations to meet rising demand. In recent years, small-pitch displays have started entering new markets such as projectors and cinema screens, each surpassing 10 billion yuan in value. Samsung recently introduced the world's first cinema LED display, measuring 10.3 meters wide and 5.4 meters tall, supporting 4K resolution. The company expects the cinema penetration rate to reach 10% by 2020. As display technologies evolve, the trend is moving toward smaller pitch sizes. This requires packaging devices to become smaller and more compact to achieve higher screen density. Additionally, the devices are becoming darker and more contrast-rich, transitioning from white light to black light, which enhances visual performance. According to Liu Chuanbiao, advances in chip technology will improve brightness and waterproof reliability, making black light suitable for outdoor applications. While COB (Chip-on-Board) technology is gaining attention, especially in the display sector, it still faces challenges in mass production. Key issues include low initial pass rates, difficulty in maintaining appearance consistency, and color uniformity. For instance, achieving consistent color in COB requires narrow spectrometer standards, significantly increasing costs. Guoxing Optoelectronics has made progress in fine splitting and color separation for its 1010 and 0808 products, maintaining cost competitiveness. Liu noted that while product quality is increasingly important, different market segments have varying needs. The lower end focuses on affordability, the middle on cost-performance, and the high-end on reliability—such as in fixed installations at locations like Times Square or sports venues. With the shrinking presence of international packaging giants, high-end brands like REESTAR are expected to open new opportunities in the global market. As the industry continues to evolve, innovation and adaptability will remain key drivers of growth.
