Last year, Oculus unveiled its vision for the standalone VR headset, the Oculus Go. One of the key benefits of this device is that it doesn’t require a PC or smartphone to function, making it more accessible and user-friendly. At CES 2018, the company announced a collaboration with Xiaomi to produce the first Oculus Go headset, with Xiaomi handling the hardware manufacturing.
Hugo Barra, who previously worked at Google and later became Vice President of Facebook’s VR division, officially announced the partnership at the event. Notably, Barra had previously been associated with Xiaomi before joining Facebook. The Oculus Go will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, a display resolution of 2,560×1,440, support for Gear VR apps, and the Oculus Mobile SDK.
The device is set to launch in 2018 with a price tag of $199, though the exact release date hasn't been confirmed yet. In addition to the Oculus Go, Xiaomi also plans to introduce MiVR Standalone for the Chinese market. While the hardware is similar to the Oculus Go, the content will be tailored specifically for Chinese users, helping local developers create region-specific apps and experiences.
