Hugo Barra, who previously worked at Google and was then a vice president at Facebook's VR division, officially announced the partnership at the event. Notably, Barra had earlier worked at Xiaomi before joining Facebook. The Oculus Go will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, a screen resolution of 2,560×1,440, and support for Gear VR apps and the Oculus Mobile SDK, offering a powerful yet portable VR experience.
In addition to the Oculus Go, Xiaomi also announced the launch of MiVR Standalone for the Chinese market. While the hardware specs are similar to the Oculus Go, the main difference lies in the content. MiVR Standalone will be tailored for Chinese users, providing localized applications and better support for local developers.
The Oculus Go is priced at $199 and is expected to be available this year, though the exact release date hasn't been confirmed yet. This move by Oculus and Xiaomi highlights the growing interest in standalone VR devices, which offer greater convenience and ease of use compared to traditional VR systems.
