Steam VR will begin supporting Windows MR platform on November 15

On November 09, 2017, I've tried to open Steam VR games with Microsoft Hybrid Reality Header. But starting from November 15, you also have the opportunity to join parties. However, not all Steam VR games will immediately support Microsoft MR.

For the Microsoft VR platform that was listed a few weeks ago, there is not much playable content at present, and this may be one of the reasons why some consumers are unwilling to purchase products. However, the addition of the Steam VR Content Library may change this.

Valve's Joe Lutwig confirmed in August that Steam VR will support Windows mixed reality. A corresponding driver will now be launched on November 15 in the form of a "preview" beta. Although this is not a complete interface to the Valve VR Content Library, it can at least provide a significant amount of content for Microsoft MR head-up users.

I had a chance to try the Steam VR bridging software through Samsung's Odyssey Windows Head. Apart from the controller, my experience is quite good. Basically, this is the Steam VR launcher in the Windows 10 VR environment.

After Steam VR is enabled, what you see is the same interface as HTC Vive. Microsoft promises that all SteamVR applications (except Oculus Exclusive and Vive exclusive content) will support Windows mixed reality heads. Acer, Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung and Dell's head-mounted products are functionally identical and can track head-room motion in the room without the need for an external camera sensor. Samsung's Odyssey head is equipped with a higher resolution OLED display and better integrated sound earphones, but the price is more expensive and needs $ 499.

I briefly experienced Valve's The Lab, Google's Tilt Brush, and Duck Season and Job Simulator. The above game is very smooth and the picture is very clear. Microsoft's wireless controller is also effective, but only occasionally there will be some tracking problems. Microsoft said that the current application has not been fully optimized.

For support of Windows mixed reality, Steam VR applications do not require special optimization, but Microsoft says this is a recommended practice. The controller may not be able to map the motion correctly, and part of the motion control may not be accurate. However, the preview version of Steam VR definitely worked, sometimes with excellent results. I tried the bow-archery game at The Lab and I feel that the overall experience is quite seamless.

In addition to Steam VR bridging software, the Windows 10 software update was also launched on November 15 to optimize the VR performance of a set of Windows PCs to help the PC run more smoothly.

Greg Sullivan, senior product manager at Microsoft, admitted that VR and mixed reality are a moving target. The ultimate goal of Windows Mixed Reality is to become a seamless part of the operating system. It may not be implemented yet, and the first generation of Windows VR headsets may not even meet Microsoft's expectations. For example, current heads cannot coexist with virtual objects like real HoloLens.

However, if Microsoft's hardware can run Steam VR applications well, this will provide users with a very critical increase in the number of applications.
