Microsoft is developing AI chips for next-generation heads

In July of this year, Microsoft disclosed to the outside world that it is developing a processor for the next-generation HoloLens head-display device. Recently, the vice president of Microsoft's equipment division officially disclosed that Microsoft has begun to develop this AI chip.

According to foreign media CNBC, Panos Panay, the global vice president of Microsoft's equipment division, said in an interview that Microsoft is developing an AI chip that can be used on next-generation HoloLens head-mounted displays. In addition to HoloLens, Microsoft may also apply it to its own hardware products.

In July of this year, Microsoft disclosed to the outside world that it is developing a processor for the next-generation HoloLens head-up display device. HoloLens is an electronic virtual image that can be overlaid on the basis of real-world vision. The user wears a head-mounted display that interacts with the touch. Microsoft also calls it "mixed reality." And this AI chip can identify the corresponding object according to the direction of the user's line of sight.

Previously, Microsoft has been diametrically opposed to its old rivals Apple and Google, this AI chip will also become Microsoft's first attempt in the field of AI chips.

In addition to HoloLens, Microsoft also intends to apply this chip to its other products. When asked if Microsoft would add this AI chip to other products, Parnell replied "Yes".

“We need to continue to explore these silicon products and develop chipsets that can bring sensors into our lives, allowing people to connect with others and their products,” said Panay in a television interview.

Today, Microsoft has launched a series of hardware products. Microsoft has expanded its Surface series of flat panel products released in 2012 to notebooks and desktops. At the same time, Microsoft also introduced the Xbox game console and the HoloLens head-mounted display.

At present, the arms race of the AI chip is already in full swing. Earlier, Huawei introduced the self-developed AI chip Unicorn 970 and equipped it with the newly released Mate10 mobile phone. Apple also joined its own research and development bionic chip in the new iPhone.

The AI chips in these electronic devices give these products the ability to apply AI technology. This means that these devices can handle some complex AI tasks without having to interact with the cloud, which makes them more efficient.

Panay also stated that Microsoft is still working with other partners to bring these AI chips into the market by advancing internal R&D. Microsoft also has many hardware partners, such as Huawei and Lenovo, both of which have already launched tablets and other products that can run Windows systems.

Panay added that Microsoft will consider licensing these developed AI chips to its partners.

"I think the most important thing we did in the development of the Surface series and the development of the AI chip... was that we had the opportunity to develop this AI technology in the Surface product platform and then let it take root in our partners. Let everyone have the opportunity to use it,” Panay said in an interview.

"In other words, we can get AI technology to reach more people in this way."
