LSI Logic recently announced the availability of the third-generation DoMiNo® 8653 (DMN-8653) DVD recorder processing chip, the first single-chip, integrated dual-encoder system processor for dual-tuner, HDD/DVD recorder platforms. Dual encoding enables DVD recorder manufacturers to offer market-leading features such as digital recording of two TV shows while watching one of the selected channels, as well as the growing popularity of high-end digital set-top boxes Features. These features are expected to drive further acceptance of products such as DVD recorders, DVRs/PVRs and next-generation TV display devices.

The highly integrated DMN-8653 eliminates the need for a second MPEG A/V encoder and uses a flexible UMA memory architecture, thus reducing system BOM cost. The flexible UMA memory architecture enables high-performance HDD/DVD recorders with two x32 DRAMs, and entry-level HDD/DVD recorders with a single x16 DRAM. Further system layer optimization can be achieved using the optical read/write servo DSP L3200 of the LSI logic band AFE. The DMN-8653 supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 format encoding and also supports DivX® certified encoding. DivX encoding enables recording of up to 12 hours of length on a single DVD disc and hundreds of hours of recording on a hard drive. The DMN-8653 also supports state-of-the-art DVD playback: DivX-certified playback, SACD, DVD-Audio, SD to HD upconverted video HDMI output, and HD-JPEG still image output.

Compared to the DMN-8652, the DMN-8653 processor further improves performance and supports high-speed duplication and dual bitstream encoding. Thanks to its unique single-chip, dual-bit stream encoding, the DMN-8653 processor supports true time shifting (pause, reverse, fast forward, jump to the current show) while recording another channel in the background. The DMN-8653, which performs this function on a single chip, can at least reduce system costs by up to $10 compared to other solutions that use multiple chips to achieve similar functionality.

The DMN-8653 system processor also includes LSI Logic's industry-leading DVD recorder features: including video pre- and post-processing technologies that support DVD recording, playback, and high-quality video; saving personal video content from camcorders to DVDs via FireWire The operation is simplified with Direct Digital DubTM technology; the YesDVDTM intelligent software solution that simplifies home video editing and conversion operations; and a fully integrated USB host for USB digital cameras and USB flash card adapters. The DMN-8653 is fully compatible with previous generations of LSI Logic DoMiNo processor software, giving manufacturers a quick time to market.
