China Mobile to Add Up to 20,000 TD-LTE Base Stations Next Year

It is reported that China Mobile will establish 10,000 to 20,000 TD-LTE base stations in China within 2012.

Under the auspices of the Chinese government, China Mobile has established TD-LTE experimental networks in six cities in China and has established a total of more than 850 base stations. In addition, China Mobile has 250,000 TD-SCDMA base stations throughout China, of which 50% can be gradually upgraded to TD-LTE.

It is understood that China Mobile has cooperated with mobile communication operators in North America, Europe and Asia to promote the adoption of TD-LTE internationally. By the end of October 2011, more than 30 TD-LTE experimental networks have been established.

Taiwanese companies are expected to play an important role in the promotion of China Mobile's TD-LTE. For example, Taiwan’s IC design company MediaTek has completed the design of TD-LTE/3G and FDD-LTE/3G smart phone chips. Quanta Computer has completed the design of TD-LTE wireless network cards and built-in TD-LTE-enabled tablet computers.
