Japan proposes to the WTO to cancel tariffs on energy-saving goods such as LEDs

The deputy ministerial meeting, part of the World Trade Organization (WTO) multilateral trade negotiations, was held in Geneva on the 25th. The Japanese government has proposed that energy-saving commodities in 11 fields, such as electric power, internal combustion vehicles, and light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, should be eliminated or lowered as “green goods”.
At the beginning of multilateral trade negotiations, the decision to achieve the liberalization of “environmental goods”, including advanced countries including Japan, has identified “environmental goods” in 153 areas. However, the number of "environmental goods" centering on air pollution and water purification equipment has so far been small.

Japanese companies are highly competitive internationally in the field of environmentally friendly goods. Therefore, the proposal to cancel tariffs is hardly supported by other countries. However, the relevant person of the Japanese government said: "In future negotiations, some strategies will be used to promote the implementation of this proposal."
