From the "Double 11" Singles Festival to 1024 Programmer Day, 520 Network Valentine's Day, and Black Friday, a variety of online and sub-cultural events have become an essential part of digital life around the world. Whether it's driving consumption or celebrating small love stories, these events ultimately bring positive impacts to industries and individuals alike. Recently, a group of international enthusiasts has proposed launching a new festival focused on VR and AR technology, driven by the same passion that fuels these global shopping events.
Although VR and AR have made significant progress in recent years, they still haven't fully entered the mainstream. Many professionals are questioning whether enough efforts are being made to bring these technologies to the public. For many companies, the upcoming holiday season could be a turning point—perhaps even a sign of things to come. Industry leaders and organizations are now working to establish a grassroots movement: "World Virtual Reality Day." Their goal is to make VR and AR as widely adopted as smartphones, and they won’t stop until that vision becomes a reality.
The festival is scheduled to take place every year on November 18th, right after the "Double 11 Broadwalkers Festival" and just before the U.S. "Black Friday." The idea is to capitalize on the excitement of the shopping season and raise public awareness about VR and AR. Choosing a weekend day was a deliberate decision to give parents time to engage with their children and introduce them to these emerging technologies.
DJ Smith, founder of NYVR—the second-largest virtual reality conference in the world—and co-founder of The Glimpse Group, a VR/AR company, is one of the key figures behind this initiative. With over 5,300 members, NYVR has already embraced November 18th as "World Virtual Reality Day," showing strong support for the cause. "From the start, NYVR’s mission has been to advance VR technology. Events like 'World Virtual Reality Day' are incredibly meaningful. In the future, they will play a crucial role in uniting the industry and driving growth."
To date, more than 20 VR organizations worldwide have joined the celebration. From government bodies to startups, many are eager to participate. Cities such as Annapolis, Washington, New York, and Maryland have confirmed plans to host events. Others, including Toronto, Boston, Phoenix, and San Francisco, are also preparing to join in.
"Virtual Reality Day might be the catalyst we’ve been waiting for to unify the market and unlock its commercial potential," said Jim Malcolm, general manager of Humaneyes, a tech company. "It will bring together different players in the industry—computer programmers, VR video creators, distribution platforms, and headset manufacturers—to help consolidate this highly fragmented sector. Virtual Reality Day will showcase the incredible progress being made across the board!"
In addition, several new VR malls have also jumped on board. As one of the more established VR stores in the U.S., VR World NYC will offer customers up to five "Virtual Reality Days" with discounted download coupons.
We can’t predict exactly how this festival will evolve in the future, but VR Net believes that any activity that promotes the development of VR and AR technology and operates within legal boundaries is a positive step forward. We wish you a happy Virtual Reality Day in advance!
