From the "Double 11" Singles Festival to 1024 Programmer Day, 520 Network Valentine's Day, Black Friday, and countless other online and sub-cultural celebrations, these events have become deeply embedded in modern digital life. Whether they're designed to boost consumer spending or to celebrate love between couples, they ultimately bring positive impacts across industries and individuals. Recently, a group of international enthusiasts has taken inspiration from this trend, aiming to create a new festival centered around VR and AR technology.
Despite significant advancements in VR and AR over the past few years, the industry still hasn't fully entered the mainstream. Many professionals are asking: Are we doing enough to make the public aware of this technology? For many companies, the upcoming holiday season could be a turning point, possibly signaling a shift in the industry’s trajectory. Industry leaders and organizations are now pushing for a grassroots initiative called “World Virtual Reality Day,†with the goal of making VR and AR as widely adopted as smartphones — and they won’t stop until that happens.
The festival is scheduled to take place every year on November 18th, just one week after the "Double 11 Broadwalkers Festival" and before the U.S. Black Friday. The idea is to capitalize on the excitement of the shopping season and raise awareness about VR and AR. By choosing a weekend date, organizers hope to encourage parents to spend quality time with their children, introducing them to these emerging technologies in a fun and engaging way.
DJ Smith, founder of NYVR — the second-largest virtual reality conference in the world — and co-founder of The Glimpse Group, a VR/AR company, supports the initiative. With over 5,300 members in NYVR, many of them have already committed to celebrating “World Virtual Reality Day†on November 18. “From the very beginning, NYVR’s mission was to drive the development of VR technology,†he said. “Festivals like ‘World Virtual Reality Day’ are incredibly meaningful. In the future, they will play a key role in uniting the industry and accelerating progress.â€
To date, more than 20 VR organizations worldwide have joined the movement. From government bodies to startups, many are eager to participate. Cities such as Annapolis, Washington, New York, and Maryland have confirmed plans to host events in celebration. Others, including Toronto, Boston, Phoenix, and San Francisco, are also preparing for the occasion.
“Virtual Reality Day might be exactly what we’ve been waiting for to unify the market and unlock commercial potential,†said Jim Malcolm, general manager of Humaneyes, a tech company. “It will bring together different players in the industry — from computer programmers to VR video creators, distribution platforms, and headset manufacturers — helping to consolidate this fragmented sector. This day will showcase the incredible progress being made in our field.â€
In addition, several new VR retail spaces have also jumped on board. As one of the more established VR stores in the U.S., VR World NYC will offer customers up to five discounted download coupons during “Virtual Reality Day.â€
While it’s hard to predict the long-term impact of this festival, VR Net believes that any event promoting the growth of VR and AR, within legal boundaries, is a positive step forward. We’re excited about the future of virtual reality and look forward to celebrating this special day with everyone. Happy Virtual Reality Day in advance!
