Solar tracking system design using photoelectric sensors

A solar tracking system is designed to enhance the efficiency of solar energy utilization, which is often limited by the fixed positioning of traditional solar devices. This intelligent system is controlled by a single-chip microcomputer, using photoelectric sensors to detect the shadow cast by a sunshade under sunlight. By analyzing these shadows, the system accurately determines the position of the sun relative to the solar device, enabling it to track the sun's movement and maximize the exposure of the device to direct sunlight. As economies grow and societies advance, natural resources are being exploited at an unsustainable rate, raising concerns about their depletion. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore alternative energy sources. Solar energy, being clean, renewable, and abundant, plays a crucial role in modern life and industry. Efficiently harnessing this resource is vital for sustainable development. However, most current solar devices are fixed, meaning they cannot always face the sun directly, leading to reduced energy capture. To address this issue, a solar tracking system has been developed to ensure that solar panels or other devices receive maximum sunlight throughout the day. The system comprises three main components: a control module, a detection module, and an execution module. The control unit is based on the STC89C52 microcontroller, while the detection module uses photoelectric sensors, position sensors, and associated circuits. The execution module includes a stepping motor and its driving circuit. The system’s structure is illustrated in Figure 1, with a prototype shown in Figure 2. Objects under the sun cast shadows that align with the direction of the sun's rays. Using this principle, the system employs a photoelectric sensor to detect the shadow of a sunshade, allowing it to determine the relative position of the sun and the solar device. The sun’s path during the day can be divided into horizontal and pitch movements. As shown in Figure 3, when the sun is directly above the device, the shadow of the horizontal shutter fully covers the horizontal photoelectric sensor. Similarly, the shadow of the tilt shutter completely obscures the tilt photoelectric sensor. When both sensors are fully covered, the device is receiving direct sunlight. If the shadow does not fully cover the horizontal sensor, the device is not facing the sun in that direction. The control module then activates the horizontal motor to adjust the position until the shadow blocks the sensor. The same process applies to the pitch direction. If the tilt sensor is not fully covered, the motor adjusts the device until the shadow fully obscures it. On cloudy days, the system still functions effectively, as the contrast between the shadow and sunlight remains visible. However, if the light is too dim, the photoelectric sensor sends a signal to the control module, which stops the system to prevent unnecessary energy use. In terms of horizontal movement, the sun moves from east to west, and the system is initially set to follow this path. In the morning, the device faces east, and by night, it faces west. Each morning, the system resets itself to continue tracking the sun’s movement. For the pitch direction, the sun rises from low to high in the morning and sets from high to low in the evening. The system follows this pattern, adjusting accordingly. At noon, the device reaches its highest point and begins descending. The next morning, it resets again to begin the cycle anew. This system ensures that solar devices are always optimally positioned to capture the maximum amount of sunlight, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing waste.
