What is the Chinese robot industry monopolized to break through the road?

The rapid development of technology is reshaping the world every day, and the winds of progress are continuously shifting directions. With the arrival of the intelligent era, "smart manufacturing" has become a significant trend in China, creating new opportunities and challenges. On May 19, 2015, the Chinese government launched "Made in China 2025," officially setting smart manufacturing as a key focus and strategic direction for industrial transformation. As one of the most promising sectors within this field, China’s robotics industry has gained considerable attention due to its strong potential, supportive policies, and growing investment. In recent years, the sector has made remarkable progress: by 2013, the domestic output of industrial robots was just 9,000 units. By 2016, that number had surged to 72,400, marking more than a sevenfold increase. However, the growth of China's robotics industry has not been without obstacles. Faced with early disadvantages and a late start, local manufacturers have struggled against the dominance of foreign companies. As they began to rise, they found themselves caught between fierce competition—“wolves in front and tigers behind”—and gradually started to make their mark. Foreign domination has long been a major challenge. In 2014, often referred to as the "year of China’s robotics boom," the industry began to accelerate. But before that, the domestic market was largely controlled by foreign brands, with domestic products accounting for less than 10%. The gap between China and global leaders in robotics is vast. While foreign companies have enjoyed over three decades of development since the 1980s, building up strong technological expertise, production scale, and cost control, China’s robotics industry started much later and faced deep-rooted challenges from its weak manufacturing base. A critical bottleneck for domestic companies lies in the production of three core components: the controller, the reducer, and the servo motor. These are essential for robot functionality, yet reliable domestic alternatives were virtually nonexistent. As a result, Chinese manufacturers had to rely on imported parts at significantly higher prices. For example, the harmonic reducer, a crucial component, was monopolized by Japanese company HD. According to Zhang Jie, CEO of Harmony, the price for these reducers sold to foreign giants like ABB, KUKA, FANUC, and Yaskawa was around $2,000, but when sold to Chinese manufacturers, it could reach up to $6,000 or more—three times the cost. Zhang emphasized, “China, as the world’s largest robotics market, has long been dominated by foreign players. Without R&D in core components, there will be no future for the Chinese robotics industry.” Under such high costs, domestic manufacturers found it difficult to compete, especially without technological advantages. This left them vulnerable in the face of global competitors. Given this situation, the need for self-reliance in core technologies has never been more urgent. In 2011, Li Liangjun, now CEO of Canop, recognized an opportunity: “As a leading manufacturing nation, China has a huge demand for robots. As the market grows, so will the demand for domestic solutions.” He then formed a startup team, aiming to develop key components for the industry. In September 2012, Chengdu Canop Automation Control Technology Co., Ltd. was officially established. The company focused on developing the robot controller, considered the “brain” of the robot, which controls all actions and determines the robot’s application range and performance. At the time, foreign brands held a monopoly over this component. To break through, Canop worked tirelessly. Facing a late start and limited resources, many domestic robot manufacturers lacked technical knowledge. To overcome this, Canop not only focused on improving its own controller but also helped other manufacturers solve technical issues and application problems. Recognizing that many local firms couldn’t afford precision calibration equipment, Canop added a built-in calibration function to its controllers. By 2017, Canop’s controllers had matured, marking a significant step forward in China’s efforts to reduce dependency on foreign components and build a more independent robotics industry.
