The surge in artificial intelligence (AI) continues to gain momentum. On December 3, the Fourth World Internet Conference kicked off in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, marking a significant event where AI emerged as one of the most hotly debated topics among global tech leaders and internet experts. The conference highlighted the growing importance of AI in shaping the future of technology and daily life.
In the early stages of AI development, different mobile phone manufacturers have varied perspectives on how to integrate this technology. According to the general manager of vivo's software development and research department, "AI must be closely tied to consumers, understanding their usage scenarios to make intelligent decisions." This approach emphasizes user-centric innovation, aiming to enhance the overall experience through smart features.
As smartphones remain the most popular consumer electronics, they have faced innovation challenges in recent years. With market saturation and structural changes, technological breakthroughs have become essential for manufacturers. While OLED displays have brought some improvements, they are still limited in terms of user experience. In contrast, AI innovation is seen as a key driver for overcoming these limitations and boosting the competitive edge of smartphone companies.
"The first half of the year was a camera war, the second half a full-screen battle," reflects the current state of the smartphone industry. Manufacturers are constantly introducing new features to drive sales, but many innovations lack depth and fail to deliver real value. However, the integration of AI by leading brands like Apple, Samsung, Huawei, vivo, and OPPO is expected to bring meaningful changes from a fresh perspective.
Despite differing views on AI at its early stage, manufacturers are exploring various ways to implement it. These include developing AI chips, optimizing systems, creating smart assistants, improving face recognition, and using computer vision to solve issues like photo management and big data processing.
Apple, known for setting trends in the smartphone world, launched the iPhone 8 series and the iPhone X during a press event in September. The iPhone X features the A11 Bionic chip with a neural engine that boosts machine learning capabilities. This allows the device to perform tasks like object and place recognition, supporting features such as FaceID and animated expressions. Apple plans to expand this technology across its ecosystem, including drones, Apple Watch, and healthcare devices.
Huawei’s Kirin 970 chip offers significantly improved AI performance, being 25 times more powerful than four Cortex-A73 cores and 50 times more energy efficient. This enhances image recognition, voice interaction, and smart photography. During a test, the Mate 10 completed a task in 5 seconds, while the iPhone 8 Plus took 9 seconds, showcasing Huawei’s AI advancements.
Samsung has also made strides in AI with its Bixby platform, introduced on the Galaxy S8 and later integrated into the W2018 flip phone. Bixby includes modules like Visual, Voice, Home, and Remind, making smartphones smarter and more intuitive for users.
At the AIWorld2017 conference, Zhang Daijun from Samsung Electronics China Research Institute emphasized the need to combine AI with real-world applications to shape consumer habits. Similarly, vivo’s R&D team believes AI should focus on solving real user problems, such as improving photo quality in low light and enhancing phone performance and battery life.
vivo has already implemented AI in its products, such as the X20, which features Smart Engine 4.0. This system learns user behavior, optimizes CPU usage, and accelerates GPU performance when needed, ensuring a smoother experience.
Looking ahead, vivo’s leadership predicts the next decade will be dominated by AI. This year, over 15% of software engineers are working on AI projects, with expectations rising to over 25% in 2018. Zhang Daijun also notes that AI is rapidly evolving, shifting from fingerprint recognition to facial recognition. Over the next five to ten years, AI will likely integrate natural language understanding and connect with everyday life scenarios, enabling seamless interconnectivity.
