A soldering iron is an essential tool in electronics manufacturing and electrical maintenance. Its primary function is to join components and wires through the process of soldering. Based on its mechanical design, soldering irons can be classified into internal heating type and external heating type. In terms of functionality, they are divided into non-suction (non-vacuum) and tin-absorbing types. Additionally, soldering irons are categorized by power level, such as high-power and low-power models, depending on their intended use.

**How Does a Soldering Iron Work?**
A typical soldering iron consists of several parts: the tip, the heating element (core), the casing, the handle, and the power cord with a plug. The tip, usually made of copper alloy, is designed to conduct and retain heat. It must reach a temperature significantly higher than the melting point of the solder to ensure proper bonding. The core, often made of ceramic or metal, houses the heating coil that generates the necessary heat.
**How to Use a Soldering Iron**
1. Before using, the soldering iron should be tinned. This involves heating the tip until it's hot enough to melt solder, then applying flux and evenly spreading solder over the tip to create a thin layer of tin.
2. To tin a wire end, twist the wire tightly, apply flux, and then touch the soldering iron tip to the wire while rotating it. Once the solder melts and adheres to the wire, lift it away from the tip.
3. For soldering a wire to a fork terminal, first tin the wire, insert it into the terminal, then apply solder to the joint. Ensure the solder flows evenly and forms a smooth, bright joint without any sharp points or excess solder.

**Structure Analysis of the Soldering Iron**
There are two main types of soldering irons: external heating and internal heating.
External heating irons have a separate heating element inside the body, with the tip mounted on the outside. The core is typically made of a ceramic tube wrapped with resistance wire, insulated by mica sheets. These irons come in various wattages, such as 25W, 45W, 75W, and 100W, with higher wattage providing higher temperatures.
Internal heating irons, on the other hand, have the heating element built directly into the tip. This design allows for faster heating and better thermal efficiency. Common specifications include 20W and 50W. A 20W internal heating iron is comparable to a 40W external model. When replacing the tip, you need to remove the spring clip and carefully pull out the tip to avoid damaging the internal structure.

**How to Make a Simple Soldering Iron Using a 5th Battery**
To build a basic homemade soldering iron, start by finding a piece of copper wire. Fold it in half and twist it tightly. Wrap insulating tape around the wire to prevent electric shocks, and add another layer of wire for extra protection.
Next, take two 9V batteries and secure them together. Insert one end of the twisted copper wire into the gap between the batteries. Finally, connect the other end of the wire to the battery’s positive terminal. This simple setup creates a makeshift soldering iron, ideal for small electronic projects. Although the materials are basic, this DIY device can be very handy for minor repairs or experiments.
