The background of my purchase was that my colleague wanted to take advantage of the Double 11 promotions to buy a cheap, mainstream Android phone. Knowing that I often shop for affordable items online (through Zhang Aunt), he asked me for help. Since he used Xiaomi phones before (like the Mi 2S or Mi 4C), the options were either the Mi 6 or Mi MIX 2. Both have good performance and specs, and they are reasonably priced in China—plus, no need to buy from overseas. However, the Mi MIX 2 had a full-screen design, but other hardware components were average. So I initially recommended the Mi 6, which could be purchased for 2599 RMB using a 400 RMB voucher on Tmall or JD. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the voucher, and even when Double 11 arrived, the Mi 6 was sold out on JD, while Tmall said delivery would take 20 days. So I had to give up temporarily. On November 13th, while browsing through Zhang Aunt, I accidentally found a deal for the Mi MIX 2 (6+64) at 2999 RMB on Central Asia’s official store. Checking previous deals, this was the lowest price recently. I contacted my colleague, who quickly placed an order, and soon the item was sold out. Here's the link to the JD purchase: [Insert Link] After placing the order, my colleague told me that the delivery would arrive two days later. On November 16th, the package finally arrived, and it was quite fast. When I saw the courier box, I noticed it was thin, which made me a bit worried about the condition inside. The package came from Guangzhou, and the box had an Amazon label. After opening the box, there was bubble wrap protecting the phone. The black Xiaomi box was sealed with plastic film, and there was an Amazon tag inside, so the film should have been sealed by Amazon. The plastic film was very neat, with no dirt or scratches. The sealing line was almost centered. I was concerned about the packaging quality, as when I helped my colleague buy the Mi 6 before, the packaging had issues—some were obviously damaged, and others were dirty, possibly second-hand. Why are so many second-hand packaged products appearing in the market? Inside the box, there was a black card with gold font, featuring a quote from Lei Jun. Then came the phone, data cable, and charger. The data cable was neatly wrapped, but compared to Apple’s cables, it wasn’t as neat. The length was around 102cm, with a Type-C interface. The charger had a matte finish, and the top part was slightly different in color. It was a 18W fast charger, made by Sercon. There was a small paper box under the phone, and a black Type-C to 3.5mm adapter was included. The phone itself was well protected, and the film on the back couldn’t be removed without damaging it. The back had a network license and the serial number. The top had NFC, and the camera ring was gold. When I turned it on, the system showed MIUI 8. The boot process was simple, allowing skipping steps like Wi-Fi and fingerprint lock. It had 64GB storage, but only 52.81GB was available. I installed a security app and ran a benchmark test, which gave a score of 174,039—similar to what an iPhone 7 could achieve. The storage speed test showed write speed at 197.17 MB/s and read speed at 721.71 MB/s, which seems normal for USF2.1. The screen was JDI, and the charging test showed fast charge mode, though the display time was short, and the remaining battery time took longer to update. Fingerprint recognition was fast, similar to the iPhone 8 Plus, unlocking within a second. Finally, I did a direct comparison between the Mi MIX 2 and the iPhone 8 Plus. The Mi MIX 2 had a larger 5.99-inch screen, while the iPhone 8 Plus had a 5.5-inch one. The iPhone screen was brighter, and the white display looked better in contrast. The charging ports looked similar. Comparing with the Redmi Note 3, the Mi MIX 2 was slightly bigger, but the size was still comparable. The curved corners on the Mi MIX 2 stood out. From user reviews and personal experience, the phone is fun to use. It has a large screen, Qualcomm 835, 6GB RAM, 128GB ROM, QC3.0 fast charging, and NFC. However, some features are missing: 1. No separate 3.5mm headphone jack, and no Type-C headphones included. This can be inconvenient for frequent music listeners. 2. Camera quality is average, and it lacks dual cameras. 3. No wireless charging. 4. No radio. 5. Fingerprint sensor is on the back, which is not very innovative. Adding these features might increase the cost, or maybe Xiaomi planned them for future models. **Postscript (a few words):** - My colleague complained that the battery life wasn’t great. - The Mi 6 that was supposed to be delivered within 20 days after Double 11 was delayed, causing some complaints. - In early 2018, the 6+64 version dropped to 2999 RMB on major platforms, and Xiaomi Mall often sold small AI speakers instead. - Within a month after Double 11, the Mi MIX 2 faced competition from models like the Honor V10 and OnePlus 5T, which had similar specs and prices. - The Mi 7 also announced wireless charging, and VIVO released a screen unlock model at CES 2018. It's amazing how fast technology is advancing.
