The background of this purchase: A colleague wanted to take advantage of the Double 11 promotions to buy a cheap, mainstream Android phone. Since I often buy cheap goods online (through Zhang Aunt), he asked me to help with recommendations. He had used Xiaomi phones before, such as the Mi 2S or Mi 4C, so the options were either the Mi 6 or the Mi MIX 2. Both have good performance and configurations, are reasonably priced in China, and most importantly, didn’t require a credit card. Considering that the Mi MIX 2 has a full-screen design, but other hardware is average, the Mi 6 was initially recommended. Tmall and JD offered a $400 voucher for 2599 (6+128), but he never got the voucher. I tried to grab one but failed. On the day of Double 11, I found that JD was sold out, and Tmall showed delivery within 20 days. So we had to give up temporarily. On November 13th, while browsing through Zhang Aunt, I accidentally saw that the Mi MIX 6 (6+64) was being discounted to 2999 yuan on the Central Asia store. After checking previous deals, I found that 2999 was the lowest price recently. I contacted my colleague, and to my surprise, he placed the order quickly. The store soon sold out. Here’s the JD link for the purchase: After placing the order, the colleague mentioned that the delivery would arrive two days later. On November 16th, the package finally arrived, and the delivery was fast. When I saw the courier box, I noticed some issues. The box was thin, which made me a bit nervous. The courier came from Guangzhou, and the box was labeled with Amazon. Inside, the box was sealed with plastic film, and there was an Amazon tag inside. It looked like the package was originally shipped by Amazon. Opening the box revealed bubble bags. The black Xiaomi box was sealed with a plastic film, and the film was clean and free of scratches. The sealing line was centered, and everything seemed well-organized. However, I must highlight the packaging issue. When I helped my colleague buy the Mi 6 before, we found problems with the packaging—some plastic was damaged, others were dirty, and it looked like second-hand packaging. Why are there so many re-packaged products in the market? Inside the box was a black card with gold text, featuring a quote from Lei Jun. Then came the phone, data cable, and charger. The data cable was neatly wrapped, but compared to Apple’s cables, it looked less neat. The data cable measured about 102cm and had a Type-C interface. The charger had a matte finish and a high-gloss surface. The top part of the charger had a slightly different color. It was a 18W fast charger, manufactured by Sercon. There was also a small paper box under the phone. The phone came with a black Type-C to 3.5mm adapter. The phone shell and screen protector were included. The back of the phone had a network license and serial number. The top had NFC functionality. The protective film on the phone was tight and couldn't be removed without damaging it. The volume buttons and power button were on the right side, with short keystrokes. On the left side, there was a camera lens and white corners at the top. At the bottom, there was a charging port and headphone jack. The back of the phone had a bright display, and there was no Xiaomi logo printed, only English text. The camera ring was gold. When turned on, the system displayed MIUI 8. The boot process was simple, allowing users to skip Wi-Fi, lock screen, and fingerprint setup. The phone had 64GB storage, but only 52.81GB was available. There were pre-installed third-party apps, but they could be uninstalled. After installing a security app, the performance was decent. Storage speed tests showed write speeds of 197.17MB/s and read speeds of 721.71MB/s, which seems normal for USB 2.1. The hardware test showed a JDI screen. Charging tests showed that the fast charge mode appeared briefly, but the remaining battery time was displayed for a long time. Pulling down the task bar showed voltage and current information. Fingerprint recognition was fast, comparable to the iPhone 8 Plus, unlocking within a second. Finally, comparing the Mi MIX 2 with the iPhone 8 Plus in black, the MIX 2 had a larger 5.99-inch screen, while the iPhone 8 Plus had a 5.5-inch screen. The iPhone screen was brighter, and the contrast looked opposite when taking photos. The charging ports looked similar. The top of the MIX 2 had curved edges, unlike the flat top of the iPhone. Compared to the Redmi Note 3, the MIX 2 was similar in size but had a larger screen. Overall, the Mi MIX 2 offers a great screen, Qualcomm 835, 6GB RAM, 128GB ROM, QC3.0 fast charging, and NFC. However, it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual cameras, wireless charging, and has a rear fingerprint sensor. These features might be added in future models. **Postscript:** 1. My colleague complained that the phone's battery life wasn’t very long. 2. The Mi 6, which was supposed to be delivered in 20 days after Double 11, was delayed until late November. Some people even complained to the Trade and Industry Bureau. 3. In early 2018, the 6+64 version of the Mi 6 was still priced at 2999 yuan on major e-commerce platforms. Xiaomi Mall often sold small AI speakers instead. It was hard to buy them separately. 4. After the New Year, the Mi MIX 2 dropped to 2999 yuan on the official site. 5. Within a month of Double 11, competitive models like the Honor V10 and OnePlus 5T were released, with similar specs and prices. They also lacked a headphone jack and dual cameras, just like the Mi MIX 2. 6. The Mi 7 was rumored to have wireless charging, and Vivo released a screen unlock model at CES 2018. It shows how fast technology is advancing.
