New York Public School Changes Health Lighting System Within Two Years To prevent school students from being contaminated by a lamp containing harmful substances in polychlorinated ethylbenzene, New York City Chief Financial Officer Liu Liuyi held a press conference on November 30 to announce plans to replace the lighting system by 2015. Schools assembled by high school students from Lower East Side and high school students are expected to receive new and updated health light bulbs.

According to the existing replacement plan of the Bloomberg government, it will take an additional 6 years to replace all the lighting systems in a total of 772 schools. However, in view of the carcinogenicity of polychloroethylbenzene, the controller of the company, Liu Liuyi, hopes to raise funds within a short period of time by issuing bonds and replace all light bulbs within two years. At present, the lighting systems in these schools contain more PCBs in the bulbs, which can cause leakage of toxic substances if they break. PCBs can cause cancer, disorders of the immune system and mental disorders, and are a great threat to student health.

“Our students should understand what PCBs are, when they should be from books, and they should not be exposed directly to poisons themselves,” said Liu Liuyi. With the support of a number of trade union organizations such as the New York Teachers’ Union, the Housing and Building Trade Committee, and the New York Central Trade Union, through green apple bonds, the plan is expected to replace toxic light bulbs for schools within two years. In addition, taxpayers will also be saved 339 million funds and create 3,000 jobs.
