LED field investment active MOCVD machine shipments surge

Global LEDs can be divided into three camps

One is the camp represented by Japan, Europe and America. The world's top five LED giants belong to this camp, including Nichia, Toyota Synthetic, Lumileds, Cree and Osram. The camp also includes Toshiba, Panasonic and Sharp. This camp is top-notch, patent-rich, and has been working in the field of ultra-high-brightness LEDs for many years. The target market is general lighting and automotive lighting. Japanese companies will take a small amount of LEDs for consumer electronics backlights, while European and American companies are not interested in LEDs for consumer electronics backlighting.

The second camp is a Korean and Taiwanese manufacturer. The manufacturers of this camp have a complete industrial chain of consumer electronics, focusing on LEDs for backlighting of consumer electronics. The technology is different from that of European, Japanese and American companies, especially in the field of general lighting. But they are enjoying a high-speed growth period.

Finally, it is a Chinese mainland manufacturer. The manufacturers in mainland China are small in scale, scattered in quantity and low in technology. In the case of packaging, there are no more than five packaging factories in Korea, and there are nearly a thousand in mainland China. Many manufacturers are engaged in resin packaging with the lowest technical content, and there are only a handful of companies engaged in SMD packaging. Nearly a thousand packaging factories have annual incomes that are less than the income of a Taiwanese leader, Everlight, and the gap between Yiguang and South Korean manufacturers is also large. The technology of Chinese mainland manufacturers is low, most of them are engaged in the production of quaternary yellow-green LEDs, mainly used for outdoor landscapes, decoration or advertising. Although mainland China is the world's largest consumer electronics production base, the procurement rights are not in the hands of mainland manufacturers, and are concentrated in the hands of Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers. The rapid growth of the LED market in the consumer electronics field is seen by mainland manufacturers and cannot be eaten. As for the general lighting field, it is even more difficult, and the technology is far behind.

Although mainland manufacturers cannot share the rapid growth of the LED market, the investment enthusiasm of mainland manufacturers is the highest, and all localities are launching LED projects. MOCVD machines have been bought in large quantities, and only 200 MOCVD machines will be purchased in the LED project in Wuhu. With more than 2000 parameters on a MOCVD machine, it is far from easy to produce a qualified product. In addition, LED patent thresholds are numerous, and accidentally they will encounter patent mines, especially Nichia, which is not exhausting the patent lawsuit.

Shuiqing Muhua research report said that LED is currently the most active investment in the electronics field. Taking the MOCVD machine upstream of the LED as an example, it is estimated that the shipment of MOCVD machines in 2010 will be 662 units, which is the sum of three years in 2007, 2008 and 2009. It is expected that this high shipment will be maintained in 2011. Actual shipments may be higher, with each MOCVD machine priced at approximately $1 million to $2 million, with the Chinese government granting a maximum of 50%. Therefore, there is a hot investment in LED investment in China, and MOCVD machines are madly purchased. In 2010, nearly 700 units were registered and filed by the National Development and Reform Commission. Some manufacturers purchased directly without the subsidies of the National Development and Reform Commission. The MOCVD machine is almost monopolized by the German manufacturer AIXTRON and the American manufacturer VEECO. The two capacities are limited and the orders have been placed in 2012.

In the second half of 2009, the LED market showed a big leap. One is that the proportion of LED backlights used in notebook computers has increased from 15% at the end of 2008 to nearly 60%. It is expected to reach 88% by the end of 2010, and some institutions predict 98%. The other is that the proportion of LCD TVs using LED backlights has increased from 0.01% to 10% at the end of 2008, and is expected to reach 27% by the end of 2010. At the same time, LCD backlights using LED backlights also increased from 0.01% at the end of 2008 to 5%. The LED market has increased dramatically, from $7 billion in 2009 to $10.7 billion in 2010, a growth rate that no other electronic product can achieve. With the increase of LED brightness and price drop, the proportion of LEDs in the general lighting field is expected to increase substantially. General lighting is a market with great potential, and the market scale is as high as 100 billion US dollars. The LED market is expected to reach $20.4 billion in 2012.
