I think I will never forget the day of January 7, 2017. That day I proved one thing with my personal experience: In the face of rudimentary technology products, you'd better curb your curiosity.

As an editor of the Guardian Technology Channel, my job is to deal with computer, text, and technology events all day long. I have always wanted to experience firsthand what it is like to work in a virtual world on a text-based basis. Is it really like those big brothers boasting that you can create a scene completely isolated from the real world and immerse yourself in it? Among them, in the face of a huge virtual screen, you can circle around and draw, tick and tickle, as casually as Tom Cruise in The Minority Report.

In order to confirm this, I began to talk to the editor a few days ago, begging him to let me try to wear a VR device to work for a whole day what it feels like, and then write an article for this topic. As a result, the editor finally agreed.

Closer to home

First of all, let me introduce the two applications selected before the experience - BigScreen and Virtual Desktop. BigScreen is a multiplayer online application that allows multiple users to share the same screen, that is, you can use it to project at work so that you can share PPT, whiteboard, documents, and other materials with colleagues, customers, and others.

Virtual Desktop, by definition, is a virtual desktop software. Users can create a virtual environment based on their built-in environment editor and project the desktop into a virtual environment. Then just like a computer in the real world, you can perform web browsing, video viewing, and other operations as usual.

Strictly speaking, these two applications are not tailored for the profession I live in, but "dwarf inside the generals", in the absence of better choices, I can only make do.

The initial experience was extremely pleasant. I use the two apps at hand to “fake” the desired environment in the virtual world and then immerse myself in it. Imagine that you are either in the African savannah or in the shadow of a crackling fire. The huge screen is there; on it, the sun, like the Han, covers only the sky and projects its light. Artificial buildings of cement ash, lead-colored clouds, and drizzle-colored rain are all confined in the so-called civilized world and can no longer intrude upon you...

However, in less than ten minutes, the dream became "crushed" into powder. As if God couldn’t look like I was enjoying myself, all of a sudden, all sorts of inconveniences, all kinds of physical discomfort, and even all sorts of jokes rushed into my own blissful paradise, and it started to last for me. Hours of torture -

First of all, my eyes and the screen are only in front of me, but I can't see the mouse and keyboard. Of course, blind play is a piece of cake to me, but you have to understand: In the real world, we can still see our hands at least when we play blindly, and most of us are already accustomed to this visual aid; After wearing a helmet, your hands are gone, which makes people feel uneasy. In addition to the disappearance of both hands, the mouse seems to evaporate. I fumbled like a blind man for a long time before recapture it. Looking back now, when my embarrassed look must have been reviewed by the chief editor, he must have blatantly laughed: This guy hadn't touched the coffee cup before he touched it for a long time. It was hard enough for him!

Second, wearing the Oculus Rift to drink water is a difficult operation. Not to mention that you accidentally knocked the cup to the ground, even if you finally succeeded in grabbing the cup, whether or not you could drink it was a problem. You see, the design of the Oculus Rift's body is not scientific enough. After I put it on, the bottom edge of the helmet just leans over the tip of my nose. This tactile impression gives me a false suggestion: In order to successfully drink water, After you lift the cup, you must try hard to throw your head back, otherwise you will not drink water if the water level in the cup is too shallow. Yes, I was just like my sister-in-law. How could I see the depth of the water level in the cup? Then I listened to the glass and lifted my neck...I suddenly got a neck.

Again, physical discomfort can't be denied. I said I have to wear a helmet to work all day, right? The cowhide has already blown right, but in the process I still used the water as an excuse to take off my helmet and steal the space for a while. Otherwise, I can't stand it anymore.

However, for any VR device, it will prompt the user to “stop using if there is any discomfort,” or “take a 15-minute break every half hour of use, whether or not you feel unwell”. Now, I can tell you responsibly: Be sure to take this type of reminder seriously. After wearing the Oculus Rift for more than three hours in a row (note: I had several breaks in the middle), I clearly felt that not only the eyes, but also the head and face began to experience severe pain. Then, my forehead began to numb, and a slight nausea and a brief sense of panic also followed. If it wasn't with the chief editor, I would definitely throw the helmet away at noon!

However, do you think that it is uncomfortable to feel this? Wrong, you are too naive.

Logically speaking, with the above applications, I can adjust the size of the virtual screen, but don't forget that the current VR device resolution is not high enough, the text must be displayed on the large screen, you can barely see a Clearly, if you are trying to reduce the screen size, I'm sorry, you can't do any text work.

So, in the course of several hours of experience, I have been facing a high-walled screen. Also, because the page I open is sometimes full of flowers, I don't think it's a long time - eyes seem to stare at the sun. Who can stand it?

Later, I had to close my eyes and find it useless. The strong light could still pierce through my eyelids. No way, I had to take the two eyes "on duty," or take a moment to look at the screen, to "look far" for a while in the virtual African savannah (know that in the virtual world, you can not absolutely avoid the screen, it will Stand upright there.)

After all the methods were exhausted, I finally acknowledged the failure and replaced the virtual environment with a dark space.

Unexpectedly, the problem came again: When I switched back and forth between the dark space and the bright white screen, I really understood what was meant by "treating".

Finally, I finally arrived in the afternoon. At that time, the coping mechanisms in my body had already begun to work, so my pain was reduced a lot. After the last few hours, I finally got free.

Reflection after experiencing

It is more accurate to say... or should be called "Reflection after waking up."

One of the great benefits of wearing a VR helmet is that you can really “knock it off” in an “isolated world” environment, effectively increasing your productivity. If you work in an open environment, this advantage will become more prominent.

Think about it: You wore a helmet with a blinding double shield, waving your arm like a scorpion in the air, which in itself released a signal: leave me alone, and be busy. In this case, people who want to talk to you Most will walk away with knowledge, and your attention will be preserved.

By the way, although this experience has given me a lot of pain, I have been able to complete this report in case of extreme physical discomfort.

However, there is still a bit of regret: I can't always create multiple high-resolution virtual displays at the same time (note: non-virtual desktops), and I can't change the position of my monitor as I like.

On the one hand, of course, this means that the above two applications have yet to be improved in terms of functionality, that is, the projection of virtual displays.

However, on the other hand, the nature of my work (word typing) also determines that I cannot arrange the position of the monitor at any time in the virtual world. Therefore, we look forward to experiencing this function in other applications in the near future.

Working with VR equipment may only be "very beautiful" in the short term

Not to mention the open-faced writing workers, for practitioners in other industries, working with VR devices is still promising.

For those who are in constant need of dealing with 3D modeling, perhaps soon they will realize that Google's 3D drawing application Tilt Brush will become the new rule-maker.

In short, if the work you are involved in requires the imaging of complex information or data, then you can expect to see a great use of VR devices in your industry.

But in the foreseeable future, VR devices cannot become office artifacts—even for the above-mentioned occupations. In other words, the office style that we have imagined and filled with a sense of the future will take a long time to become a reality.

At present, the lack of a general computing environment is a common problem in the VR industry. We can't yet perform multiple tasks simultaneously on several apps, and we can't quickly switch between apps.

In this case, if an application is not enough to help you complete all the work in a VR environment, you better have a virtual desktop as an assistant. This requirement requires the designers of VR applications to meet.

In a word, they have to learn to design their own products based on the specific requirements of specific users. It is as if: The user is best to have a floating browser window to provide visual reference when modeling with Tilt Brush; it is best to see a text input box at any time during 3D visualization work, etc.

Frankly speaking, although this is not a matter of urgency, it is indeed very difficult - it is more difficult than removing the physical discomfort that VR equipment brings to people. It requires us to fundamentally redefine the mission of the VR platform. When this step is completed, no one can predict; at the same time, we must also establish a certain user interface standard that can be imagined and reached in this “small target”. Before, we will certainly experience many failures.

But I wait for the final success. On that day, I must once again experience the charisma of VR. At that time, I would be more than a eager to try.
