IR Introduces Powerful Self-Excited Electronic Ballast Lighting Control IC

International Rectifier (IR), the world leader in power management technology, recently introduced the IRS2153D electronic ballast IC for fluorescent lamps. The new 600V self-excited half-bridge IC has a built-in bootstrap diode that simplifies circuit design. New ballast ICs outperform older self-excited bipolar transistor solutions in terms of efficiency and performance. The IRS2153D's oscillating frequency accuracy of 3% helps designers optimize the selection of external components during the manufacturing process to achieve consistent lamp brightness. The new components also have an external warm-up function that sets the correct preheat frequency at the correct time to extend the life of the lamp. The IRS2153D is a lead-free device with 2V undervoltage lockout hysteresis to enable a more reliable ballast circuit to prevent unwanted shutdowns during transient reactions. In addition, an undervoltage lockout circuit is provided in the new component to ensure that the high-side floating voltage can properly switch the high-side gate driver output to protect the external MOSFET. The IRS2153D is based on IR's popular IR2153x product family, which integrates a "555" oscillator with a 600V half-bridge gate driver to drive two output FETs or IGBTs. The IRS2153D is fabricated using IR's proprietary HVIC technology and is ideal for designing semiconductor products that drive MOSFETs and IGBTs. Among them, the design of the gate driver output uses a lock-free CMOS circuit. The technology integrates a low voltage driver with a high voltage level shifter for high side and low side gate drivers in a single IC.
