Blue LED business opportunities and applications (Figure)

Editor's Note: In just a few years, Taiwan has become the world's leading manufacturer of blue-light diode (LED) with gallium nitride (GaN) as its main manufacturing material. GaN was invented for only 10 years and is now an important component of LED lighting built by SSL (Solid-state lighting). At the same time, LEDs are quickly becoming a key component in everyday lighting, including everyday white light. High-brightness LEDs are not only low-power, but also the main components of next-generation lighting. It is indispensable that Asian operators have introduced LED-based lighting devices in different systems. In order to analyze the key role played by Taiwanese manufacturers in the relevant fields of the blue LED industry, and to explore the future layout strategy, in addition to some of the views presented in this article, we will hold the third session at the Ambassador Hotel in Hsinchu from 16 to 18 this month. The BLUE 2005 seminar also invited LED leaders and scholars from all over the world to analyze the vertical industry as the main axis, analyze the technology development and market trends of the LED industry, and further explore the opportunities of Taiwanese manufacturers. . Breakthrough in Blu-ray LED Manufacturing In the 1950s, blue LEDs based on GaN were first introduced to the United States; however, it took decades to become a mass-produced technology. Japanese scientist Professor Shuji Nakamura can be said to be the main driver of the breakthrough of the entire blue LED technology. When Dr. Nakamura worked in Nichia Chemical Industry in the mid-1990s, he led his R&D team to produce high-brightness blue LEDs, and then used Sapphire substrates as the main substrate material to make blue light. This breakthrough not only affected the technological development of the entire lighting industry, but also the GaN LED production in Taiwan, China and South Korea grew more than three times before 2004, becoming the main production area of global blue LED. Taiwan is also currently leading the way in other color LEDs. In terms of red and yellow LEDs, Taiwan has more than 80% market share in the international market. Although companies in Japan, Europe and the United States are still leading the way in Blu-ray LED production technology, Taiwan, China and South Korea are rushing to catch up; the shift from a large number of related packaging orders is enough to support this trend. In view of the increasing use of LEDs in general and more power-efficient systems, the integration of Blu-ray LED system manufacturers has also risen rapidly. Nowadays, some creative lighting designs use LEDs, and blue LED devices are an indispensable element in mobile phones and backlit LCD screens. LED production value will be doubled. Dr. Robert Steele, a researcher specializing in high-brightness Light Emitting Diodes (HB-LED) and GaN market trend, Strategy Unlimited (SU), will be the main speaker of this year's BLUE 2005. one. Dr. Steele estimates that GaN production will grow significantly from $32 billion last year to $76 billion in 2009. While high-brightness LEDs dominate the GaN market, laser diodes (LDs) and other electronic devices are still in the early stages of development and are expected to have steady growth rates over the next five years. Dr. Steele said the overall HB LED market (all colors) will grow to a market size of approximately $7 billion by 2009. In 2002, when Yahua began mass production of GaN-based blue and violet diodes and blue LEDs, it officially announced that global blue LEDs have finally been extended from technical to actual production. At the same time, Taiwan has also obtained the related production equipment of MOCVD (Metal Organic Vapor Epitaxy), and can start manufacturing blue LED devices. The MOCVD method produces a blue LED or LD bare crystal by implanting a GaN surface layer and an alloy thereof on a Sapphire or tantalum calcium carbide (SiC) substrate. In the past years and this year's content, the first session of the BLUE 2003 in Texas, the telecommunications market and most of the composite semiconductor companies in the development of blue LED can be said to be very loose. However, Taiwan's LED industry and Lumileds and Cree from the United States can be said to be the exception. BLUE 2004 focuses on Asia and has also moved from the United States to Hsinchu, Taiwan. With the take-off of blue LEDs, operators in Taiwan, China and South Korea have begun to enter the manufacturing and related packaging fields. Last year's BLUE 2004 also attracted the participation of professional players. This year's BLUE 2005, in addition to a group of speakers from the solid-state lighting industry, Dr. Robert Steele of Strategies Unlimited (SU) Optoelectronics Practice, will discuss the latest LED market status and related data for participants. In addition, Dr. Steele will also review the analysis of high-power LEDs, phosphors, and downstream LED application trends. China National SSL Chairman Wu Ling will comment on China's HB LED development and its National SSL program. In addition, George Mueller, CEO and Chairman of Color Kinetics (CK) from the US LED technology industry, will also give a speech on the topic of "Lighting the Night - LED Mastery and Technology". Other topics include: Dr. SH Chan, CEO of Taiwan Xiangyu Optoelectronics and General Manager, will discuss the application of mobile phone and SMD market, Volker Haerl, Director of OSRAM R&D Center, will discuss the distribution of the automotive market, Tsunemasa, Yamaguchi University, Japan Prof. Taguchi introduced Japan's white LED program, South Korea's Dongbu Anam Semiconductor vice president to share the Korean manufacturer's opinion, and the US Fish & Neave IP Group's Ropes & Gray LLP law firm Patruucua A. Martone will publish the intellectual property rights (IP) of the LED industry. Speech...etc. ▲ Pictured: Driade - Osaka's Shinsaibashi, the 240-foot iColor gallery. (Photo / Color Kinetics Japan)
